Genuine Emotion
I have long been perplexed by adult’s fascination with childhood.
Why wish to be Peter Pan? Why is innocence to be admired? What do children have that adults couldn’t have too? When my son was born, I began to witness what so many before me had so easily seen -- a child lives out loud. Nothing is attempted half way, especially where their feelings are concerned. Every situation, good or bad, is met with raw emotion. It was something I had to see to believe.
Over the years, I have documented hundreds of honest responses to life from the children who surround me. In part because of an interest in the sheer range of possible emotions. In part because of my subject’s complete lack of a filter.
I have chosen to present these images through a black and white wet image Polaroid transfer process to help the viewer recapture the moments of their own childhood. It is my hope that as adults visit these images, with their nostalgic quality, they, too, can journey to the truest moments of their lives and learn to feel again. As an additional reminder that with “the good comes the bad” the images included run the gamut from great happiness to deep sorrow This project has convinced me that by reconnecting to the genuine emotions of our childhood, we will begin to recognize our own innocence again and create a new kind of adulthood.
